Foreword

When I first met Dr. R. Radhakrishnan in 1992 - whom I now fondly call Radha Bhai - I knew him as both a scientist and a lover of the arts. A few years later, with his characteristic humility, he showed me some handwritten sheets of Tamizh poetry. The verses were simple, pure, and very clear. As he narrated the stories and episodes behind them with childlike enthusiasm, I realized not only his deep love for Tamizh but also how well read he was in Indian history, mythology, fables, temples, and more.

We soon began speaking about setting his poems to music, and that marked the beginning of our cherished creative journey together. In 2004, we recorded and released Thenum Thinaiyum, an album of ten songs penned by Radha Bhai. The CD was released by the then Consul General of India in San Francisco, Sri H. H. S. Vishwanathan. Since then, Radha Bhai has been a fountain of creativity—writing songs that vividly reference deities, temples, and nature. Some brim with devotion, some sparkle with humor, and others challenge with thought-provoking questions. His versatility as a lyricist is truly unmatched. For many Bharatanatyam artists in the Bay Area, he has been the go-to lyricist for thematic productions. His deep love for the Tamizh language and his gift for expression continue to inspire and support artists and musicians alike.

On a personal note, as a family friend, Radha Bhai has always been there for us - delighting our son with mythological and historical stories since childhood, encouraging me in my musical endeavors, and being a mentor and inspiration to our entire family. This book represents only a small fraction of his prolific body of work. Thanks to his wife, our dear friend Girija - whose persistence made this book possible - the world can now enjoy Radha Bhai’s songs.
